My 17 month old just climbed out of his crib for the first time last night, so I’m getting one of those tents to put over it for the next few months.
We have another baby coming when my son turns 2, and I know around then is a common time to make the switch. Our newborn will be in a bassinet for the first few months, so the crib won’t be needed again until December/January. Should we switch him over this summer so he can get used to it before the baby comes or might that be too early? What are signs that they’re ready?
We’ll start looking for beds soon then! I thought I’d get a lot of “it’s too early” responses. Any suggestions on where to look for a good bed?

wow…people sure have some strong opinions! I think many people misunderstood that i was asking about a mattress PAD. At 10 months, he IS capable of rolling over, sitting up or even turning his head. I’m pretty sure my 27 lb baby wont sink too far into a 1 1/2 inch pad. AND anyone who has or has seen one knows that they are very firm. when I asked this question, I was hoping to get answers from people who can read and comprehend, or have knowledge of the product. thanks to those of you who tried to be helpful. good luck with your new baby ericka k. and her bumpers (she currently sleeps in a bassinet)

I plan on moving
her to the crib in a few wks (she is 3wks) and have heard controversy
over the safety of bumpers andsuffocation…etc…some say it is dangerous others not….kinda confused!

(at what age can the turn themselves over?)

My wife and I are moving across the country less than two months after we have our first child. We are considering buying a portable crib or a bassinet instead of a regular crib for the first couple of weeks.

When we went to look at portable cribs, the mattress seemed pretty flimsy compared to the regular cribs. Would it be safe for a newborn to sleep in a portable crib for that long? Should be try to find something with a firmer mattress –like a bassinet or a regular crib?

My Grandfather and Uncle are excellent carpenters and I would love for them to make me an original crib and baby furniture for my soon-to-be-here child. Is this a safe option as far as the crib is concerned?
I went to the National Safety Council’s website to see what they require as far as safety goes and all they really require are no lead based paints and the crib dimensions must stay within their guidelines.
