I used a bumper for my first child and found that she was fine with it up until she was starting to pull herself up. Then she kept getting herself tangled in it and I took it off. She never suffocated or anything, obviously she's doing fine. With my son I decided to go with a crib set that had just a crib fringe instead of a bumper and he was just fine too. He never got his legs or head caught in the rails. I just didn't see the point of having an expensive bumper that I could only use for a few months.

I found a pic of a crib fringe, the one I had was like this but blue and made the crib still look adorable:

It would probably be really easy to just make one yourself for a lot less if you know how to sew.

Anyway I think it would be what your instinct says, I doubt the odds of anything happening to your baby with a bumper in their crib is high. My mom had one in my crib and I'm still alive. Heck, she used to just put me in a basket with no seatbelt in the car and surprisingly I'm still here :)

It all depends on who you ask, I used them for both my boys that are now 4 and 2. My sister didn't use them. Nothing bad happen to either of our children, but my sisters little boys chubby legs got stuck between the rails alot and would wake up crying. A child could "possibly" suffocate on them.. Just like a baby could suffocate on its blankie or crib sheet or teddy bear. These are the days of more caution than less, I personally provided both my children with crib sheets, bumpers, blankies, and teddy bears.
