my daughter had a bumper from day one. She co-slept with us for 11 months, and then when we moved her into the crib, she was fine with the bumper. but i've heard that a lot of new parents love to use the mesh bumpers, which breathe.

Bumpers are ok until they can turn over. There is no one set age that they turn over. Some can do it one way at 4 months and maybe not do it again for a while (like my daughter) and other times not til 5 months or so.

Another thing abt putting her in the crib....I personally would advise you NOT to use blankets. We did with our daughter and a couple times we caught her with it plastered to her face which scared the crap out of me because I feared the worst. She now only sleeps with a onesie and a sleepsack found at Babies R Us. Absolutely perfect. They have them in various sizes.

my baby had a bumper the whole time, and shes alive, thanks to the good lord, anyways, she turned over about 3-4 months. when they do get to moving around in the crib i found a trick, weave the bumper in and out of the slats so that it is tight and they cant get stuck in the bars, also they cant get stuck in the bumper. but when they start to grab and stand on it, its time to take it out so they are safe and dont fall out. good luck

for a newborn it doesn't really matter, because they dont roll around in their crib. When they start rolling you can try what I do, and I noticed another person posted the same thing... stuff the bumper down beside the mattress... that way it still looks cute, but it poses no hazard to your child, because its even with your mattress, you might have to bend the bumper pad a little under the mattress for it to be even... but if your wondering for looks then that's a good solution. But keep an eye on your child, my sons to the point now where he just realized their there so now hes trying to pull them out so I have to take them off... Just remember safety is always more important then looks!

I took them out. They aren't safe and you never know when I baby will move or roll the first time. If you are afraid they will bump themselves or get their feet caught in the rungs, get a Breathable bumper. It's made of mesh, and a baby can breathe through it.

Since she's so little and unable to move around by herself, the crib bumpers are probably safe, BUT since she's so little and unable to move around by herself, she doesn't need the crib bumpers because she won't be bumping up against the sides at all. Better safe than sorry, I would take them out.

they say if you are going to use them they should be removed when baby can grab and pull. But apparently they do reduce the airflow around baby and might increase the risk of SIDS. You can get airflow bumbers though that are safer. I've never used one and he's fine in there. I have gotten up at night a couple of times and seen him with both legs out of the crib though, but he's never hurt himself by doing this.

Why would a newborn need a bumper? After they start to roll then they are still pointless since baby cannot look out. They are a complete waste of money.
